What is a Recall?

The process to remove an elected official from office is called a recall.

  • A recall petition is initiated.
  • For the petition to be valid, it requires signatures from 15% of Deadwood registered voters.
  • The purpose of the petition is to set a special election.
  • If the petition is certified, a special election will be set.

THE RECALL PETITION WAS CERTIFIED ON TUESDAY, 09/30/25.

170 of Deadwood's registered voters signed the petition. Well over 17%.  Almost every voter approached to sign the petition, did so.  The recall petition will now be brought before the City Commission in order to set a date for the Special Election.  Once the date for the election is set, other candidates can gather signatures via petition to be on the ballot to run against Blake Joseph on the special election.  Whomever wins the election, wins that seat on City Commission.
